Gary Howard Rhodes, 73, longtime resident of LaBelle died Saturday, September 2, 2006 in the Rexburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following surgery and a life-long heart condition.
He was born January 28, 1933, to William Howard and Noma Ellen Geisler Rhodes in Rigby, Idaho. He attended Midway High School and participated in Seminary, Sports, and Future Farmers of America. He also attended Ricks College for an Agriculture short course. In 1952, he married Aladene Jones in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Gary grew up on a farm in Annis where his love for farming started. He worked on farms in Annis and on Snarr Road in Idaho Falls, and later purchased a farm in LaBelle where he farmed and milked cows for 34 years. He was the President of LaBelle Irrigating and Dilts Canal Companies. He served on the boards of the ASCS and the Great Feeder Canal, and also on the Jefferson County Farm Bureau Board for 28 years. He received the Conservation Farmer of the Year Award in 1994 and Jefferson County Farmer of the Year Award in 2002.
Gary was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings throughout his life. Gary and Aladene served an 18-month LDS Mission to the Oklahoma Tulsa Mission. Gary also served as an officiator in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Gary loved spending time with his family, reading, traveling, and fishing.
Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years Aladene Rhodes of LaBelle, a brother Bill(Doris) Rhodes of Petersburg, VA; 9 children Bradley (Diane) Rhodes of Ashton, Coleen (James) Thatcher of LaCanada, CA, Janet (Larry) Stucki of Ririe, Jan (Verl) Dial of Rigby, Alene (David) Breckenridge of Tetonia, Benjamin (Megan) Rhodes of Rigby, Julie (Alan) Thompson of Victor, Joseph (Chantel) Rhodes of Salem, UT, and Sarah (Johnathan) Kay of Rexburg, 42 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Howard and Noma Rhodes, his son Jeffrey Howard Rhodes and one grandson Heath William Rhodes.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the LaBelle 2nd Ward LDS Chapel 4223 E. 528 N., with Bishop James Bazil officiating. The family will visit with friends at the LaBelle Church on Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery, under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
