Agnes Lloyd Poulsen, age 97, formerly of Rigby, died in St. George, Utah Tuesday, January 1, 2008. She was born in her maternal grandparent’s home in Providence, Utah to Archie E. Lloyd and Agnes Elizabeth Neddo Lloyd on May 29, 1910.
She was the second child of ten children, six boys and four girls.
Her first five years were spent on a dry farm and ranches in Central, Soda Springs and Grace Idaho. When she was five years old her parents were called on a mission to San Diego, California. They were only there for a short time when they returned to Idaho. When she was eight her father was again, called on a mission, this time to Independence, Missouri. The family accompanied him there. Four years later they returned once again to southern Idaho.
When Agnes was nineteen years old her mother passed away. This left Agnes as the oldest of seven children and the responsibility of raising the family fell upon her shoulders.
The following summer she started dating a young man she had known in Grace, Idaho. She knew right away that Alden Poulsen would be her eternal companion. They were married October 6, 1930 in the Salt Lake Temple. They began their married life during the depression years and life was not easy. They made their first home in Thatcher, Idaho. Five years later they moved to a farm in Rigby, Idaho.
Five children were welcomed into their lives, R. Kay (Coleen Poole), St. George, Ut., Lloyd (deceased) (Dorothy Ferny), Layton, Ut., Ronald (Colleen Caldwell), Idaho Falls, Id., Delores (deceased) and Donna (J.B.) Maxwell, St. George, Ut. Seventeen grandchildren, forty_two great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren followed.
Agnes was always involved with community and church activities. She was PTA President and also served on the State Board of PTA. Agnes also served as County and District Commander of the American Cancer Society. She was also active in the Rigby Study Club. Agnes had a very interesting hobby that she shared freely with many groups in southern Idaho and Utah. She was the ultimate hostess and always set beautiful tables to compliment her wonderful food. For years she taught classes and inspired women to make any meal special.
Relief Society and the Young Women's program on a ward and stake level also filled her time. When asked one time what her favorite calling was she was quick to reply "the Mia Maids and Camp Director".
Alden and Agnes had many opportunities to travel throughout the United States but always had a desire to go to Hawaii. When they received a Mission Call to the Visitor Center at the Hawaiian Temple they were delighted. Before they could complete that assignment they were asked to return home to serve in the Idaho Falls Temple, Alden as a counselor and Agnes as an assistant Matron.
Her husband died in 1971 and in 1985 Agnes moved to St. George, Utah.
Her parents and six siblings preceded her in death. Surviving Agnes are brothers Orval (Thoma), SLC, Bennion (Dorothy), SLC and sisters, Phyllis (Howard) Schow, Ogden, Venice Holt, SLC, and a sister_in_law Glenda, Mesa, AZ.
The family extends sincere gratitude to Rocky Mountain Hospice Care and The Kolob Care and Rehab Center for their tender and watchful care.
