Alvin Julius Steltzer, age 80 of Idaho Falls, passed away Friday, July 1, 2016, at the home of his daughter Carol in Grant.
Alvin was born July 9, 1935 in Ellendale, North Dakota, a son to August Steltzer and Magdalena Ida Schrum Stelzer. On September 3, 1953, he married Claudia Wheeler in Ririe, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They were blessed with 4 children.
Alvin was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he enjoyed serving others and gave tremendous amounts of service of all kinds. He worked in many capacities throughout his life; he farmed, was a quarter horse trainer and he ran a dairy, he prepared graves at the Ucon Cemetery for over 30 years, was an expert wood craftsman and carpenter and he worked as a material handler at the INEL before retiring.
He provided his arena for events held by the 4-H and other organizations, and received a 4-H recognition award. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, horseback riding and traveling with friends and family. He loved growing a vegetable garden and sharing and cooking his harvest. Alvin loved basketball; he played on school and city teams and refereed for many years.
Alvin was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed.
He is survived by his daughters; Gina (Doug) Piper of Lewiston, ID, Carol (Robert) Johnson, of Rigby, ID, Brenda (Paul) Pincock, of Teton, ID, son; Clint (Rae Ann) Steltzer, of Ucon, 17 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia Wheeler, his parents, August and Magdalena Steltzer, sister Phylis Deline Simmons, brother, Dennis Lee Steltzer and a grandson, Riley Paul Pincock.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at the Milo LDS Chapel, l2127 North 75 East, Idaho Falls, 83401. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5th, at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 W. Main Street, Rigby, and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ucon Cemetery. Services are under the care of Eckersell Funeral Home in Rigby.
