Bert George Niederer, 71, passed away in his home in Arizona on March 6, 2026. Bert was born on September 22, 1954, in Rexburg, Idaho, to George Emil Niederer and Dorothy Davis Niederer. He spent much of his early life in Terreton, Idaho, and attended West Jefferson High School and Challis High School where he graduated from.
Bert was known as a quiet man with a strong presence. At first impression he could seem intimidating, but those who knew him well understood that he had an incredibly generous heart. His wit could be sharp and quick, but he was also the kind of person who would show up to help when someone needed it. Bert believed in working hard and did so throughout his life.
In his younger years, Bert worked as a cowboy on the D&D Ranch, a job he truly loved. Ranch life suited him well, and he took pride in the hard work and responsibility that came with it. After suffering an injury that ended his time on the ranch, Bert returned to school and began a new path. He first worked as a welder at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) and later became a Health Physics Technician. Bert eventually transferred to the Hanford site in Washington, where he worked for more than 20 years before retiring.
Bert married Janie Mitchell (divorced), and later married Rebecca Niederer (divorced) of Kennewick, Washington. Over the years he lived in several places including Idaho, Texas, Washington, and Arizona.
Bert loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing, hunting, horses, and trap shooting. Horses were one of his greatest passions, and he had a natural gift for working with them. Bert seemed to understand horses in a way that few people do, patiently training them and bringing out their best qualities. Those who watched him work with a horse often said it seemed almost effortless, he had a calm confidence that horses trusted. He enjoyed helping his step-daughters and taught them horsemanship. He also took them on many hunting, fishing, and camping adventures. He enjoyed rodeos and team roping and was known for his horsemanship. Bert was also active in trap shooting and was a member and former president of the Connell Gun Club, spending many days with friends shooting in Arizona at the Tucson Gun Club. He also loved gardening and took pride in growing vegetables, with many family memories centered around time spent harvesting green beans, corn, and strawberries together.
He is survived by his step-daughters, Candice Sines and Stephanie Huerta, and his grandson Booker. He is also survived by many brothers and sisters: Gailyn (Lynda) Peterson of Middleton, Idaho; Lynne Bain (Larry, deceased) of Bountiful, Utah; Larry (Jayne) Niederer of Hamer, Idaho; Bill (Penny) Niederer of Kona, Hawaii; Merriloy (Dean) Paynter of Taylorville, Utah; Bob (Beckie) Niederer of Lyman, Wyoming; Lori Todd of Green Valley, Arizona; and Betty Niederer of Green Valley, Arizona.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, George Emil Niederer and Dorothy Davis Niederer; his step-mother, Maurine Peterson Niederer, his sister Marolyn McCormick; his brother Glenn Peterson; his former spouses Carol Rankin and Janie Mitchell Niederer.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Terreton, Idaho Stake Center, 1297 E 1500 N, Terreton, Idaho. Interment will follow at West Jefferson Memorial Cemetery.
Bert will be remembered for his quiet strength, sharp wit, deep love for the outdoors, and the steady, hardworking life he lived.
