Billy Ray (Bob) Sargent, 74, of Ririe, Idaho died December 31, 2002 in Salome, Arizona from a
lingering illness.
He was born April 9, 1928 in Grant, Idaho to Ray L. and Billie Nichols Sargent. He attended
Menan grade school and Midway High School. He completed his education in the military. At
the age of 17 in July of 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with his younger brother Kenneth. He
served on the destroyer escort USS Hamil stationed in England. After his service he returned to
Idaho to work in various fields. He worked as a bus driver for the A E C, drove long haul truck
for P I E and was a transport manager for Tri State Motor Transit. At the time of his retirement
he had driven for H and K Contractors for 15 years.
During his retirement he and his companion Marylin Mellies divided their time between winters
in Brenda, Arizona but always returning to his beloved Idaho for the summers.
He enjoyed raising and training race horses. He was a long standing member of the National
North Chariot Racing Association. He enjoyed long drives and socializing with his friends at the
local coffee shop.
“Sarg” is survived by his companion Marylin Mellies and his children, 5 daughters: Linda (Jerry)
Simonson, Rigby, Idaho Barbara (Tim) Nielson, Mesa, Arizona, Nancy Johnson, Idaho Falls,
Idaho, Renee (Ron) Kaas, Kearns, Utah, Mikie Shay, Salt Lake City, Utah and 1 son billy Ray
Sargent, Idaho Falls, Idaho, 241/2 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, 3 sisters Joann
(Pete) Stewart, Alta, Wyoming, Linda Schroth, San Anselmo, California, and Shelley Burdett of
Idaho Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a beloved stepfather Adrian Eames, his younger brother
Kenneth and one granddaughter.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Eckersell Memorial Chapel to celebrate his life on Friday, January10, 2003 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
