Blair LaMar Bybee

Blair LaMar Bybee was born 4 July 1945 in Rigby, Idaho, to Walter L. and Zella S. Bybee. He was raised a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and received all priesthood ordinations in the Archer Ward. 

Blair graduated from Madison High School, Rexburg, Idaho, and subsequently attended Utah State University where he received yearly recognition for scholastic achievement. He graduated from Utah State with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. He was admitted to the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1966 and received the Degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1970 following which he completed a medical and pediatric internship at the University of Utah. 

In July 1971 Blair was called to serve in the Samoa Mission as the first medical missionary called in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was set apart 10 August 1971 by A. Theodore Tuttle of the Quorum of the Seventy and released 26 June 1973 in Pago Pago, Tutuila, American Samoa, by Ralph G. Rodgers, president of the Samoa Mission. He returned several times as a volunteer in the pediatric department of the National Hospital, Moto'otua, Apia, Western Samoa, and in 1982 was awarded a Certificate of Life Honorary Membership in the Western Samoa Medical Association.

Subsequent Church callings include Gospel Doctrine teacher (x3); branch mission leader, Salt Lake Temple veil worker, elders quorum instructor, elders quorum president, counselor in branch presidency; high counselor (x3), ward executive secretary, bishopric counselor (x2), Church Service Missionary in the Family History Department (Medieval Families) for 15 years, Sunday School president, assistant to HP group leadership; counselor in YM presidency, YM president, ward clerk, assistant stake executive secretary and stake executive secretary (11 years), and Church-service Missionary (Church History Library).

In July 1975 Blair completed his residency training in pediatrics at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, Portland, Oregon. In 1978, he became certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and later that year, having served a fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology at the University of Utah, became certified by the American Board of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. He became an assistant professor and then associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Utah.

Blair is survived by Clyde and family, Karen and family, Kyle (Joan) and family, Greg (Addie) and family.

Blair is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Rachel Bybee and his sister-in-law Charolette Bybee.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunnydell Ward, 201 West 8000 South Rexburg, Idaho, with a visitation prior to the service from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery.

He will be missed by friends and family.
