Britt Melvin Hargraves, 75, of Menan, died Monday, October 5, 2009, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
He was born November 20, 1933, in Pocatello, to Junior Britt Hargraves, and Gertrude Bailey Hargraves. He attended schools in Pocatello, graduating from Pocatello High School. He continued his education at Idaho State University and graduated from University of Utah with a Master’s Degree in deaf education. He worked as an educator of the deaf and as a speech pathologist in the Rigby school district; he taught at Idaho State University and BYU-Idaho and was the Assistant Principal at the School of the Deaf in Gooding, Idaho. He also taught at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland. He served in the U.S. Navy with the Red Ripper Squadron, during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Kearsearge, the USS Oriskany and the USS Coral Sea. On April 25, 1968, he married Elizabeth Parkinson, in Brigham City, Utah; their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple April 1, 1969.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities including; Branch President, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, and Idaho Falls Temple Ordinance Worker.
Britt enjoyed flying airplanes, was an avid reader, and loved spending time with his family. He found humor in everything.
He is survived by his wife; Elizabeth Hargraves, of Menan, daughters; Kathy (Don) Strong, of Plymouth, Michigan, Carol (Bart) Caple, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Teri Hargraves, Cheri Hargraves, both of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Taya (Fred) Conlon, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jesika (Charlie) Snyder, of Chubbuck, Idaho, sons; Kelly (Connie) Hargraves, of Nederland, Texas, David (Jennifer) Hargraves, of Star, Idaho, sister; Barbara (Bob) Barlow, of Pocatello, Idaho, brothers; Jerry (Betty) Hargraves, of Pocatello, Idaho, David (Gracie) Hargraves, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, 26 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, October 9, 2009, at the Menan Stake Center, with Bishop Gary Asper, conducting. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. prior to services at the stake center.
