Burton William Alder

December 17, 1952 — October 23, 2024

Burton William Alder, age 71, passed away peacefully at his home in Rigby, Idaho on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

Burt was born December 17, 1952 in Heber, Utah; a son to Margaret Marie and A. Burton Alder. He grew up in Midway, Utah with three older sisters.  He attended Wasatch High and participated in many sports including wrestling, basketball and track.  After graduating, he pursued higher education at Dixie State College, University of Utah and the University of Phoenix.

Burt was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints.  He volunteered as a service missionary in Japan for two years.  Not long after his return, he met Sheri Lee Stoddard, and they were sealed on May 22, 1982 in the Salt Lake Temple. They’ve both remained active and dedicated members of their faith, regularly volunteering in their local temple.

Burt was a humble man with a quick wit and could turn his hand to any task.  He was always reading and keen to learn.  His career journey included a stint as a ranger at Deer Creek Reservoir, loan officer, and Electronic Technician – which contributed to his final career path of Controls Engineering which afforded him the opportunity to work across the country and around the globe.  His career journey moved he and Sheri to Almy, Wyoming; Salt Lake City, Layton, Wellsville and Payson, Utah; Apple Valley, California; and finally, Rigby, Idaho.

Burt was intelligent, inquisitive and insightful.  He had a passion for troubleshooting electronics, mechanics, people and situations. He had a knack for locating the root cause of any situation.  He always had time to lend an ear, a helping hand, and offer wise advice.  He rarely sat still long, but if he did his nose was buried in a book until he dozed off with it still on his chest.  His ability to retain so much information was impressive, and he loved to share his knowledge.  He proudly instilled in the next Alder generations his passion for cars, music, nature and adventure.  His happy place was in the mountains – he loved to be camping, fishing, and driving his off-road vehicles on the weekends.  Any time spent around family, especially his grandchildren, filled his heart with joy.

Burt is survived by his wife Sheri of Rigby, Idaho; two daughters, Laura (Ian) Macaskill-Telfer of South Jordan, Utah; Anastasia “Annie”(Jeffrey) Marshall of Eagle Mountain, Utah; his son William (Cecelia) Alder of West Jordan, Utah; his eldest sister Inez Wilde of Midway, Utah; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents A. Burton and Margaret Alder, two sisters Mary Walton and Jane (Tony) Mangum.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. in Midway, Utah at the Deer Creek Chapel located at 1102 South Center Street.  Burial will be in the Midway Cemetery immediately following the service.
