Charley Sherman Winscot, Jr., 79, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away on June 15th, 2018 surrounded by family. He was born to Charley Sherman Winscot, Sr. and Sarah Louise Smith in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He married his high school sweetheart, Clara “Coke” (Skerjanc) Winscot, on January 27, 1957. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 25, 1981. Charley described it as a whirlwind romance that never ended. Their early years were busy raising their five children, they enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, snowmobiling and boating. They loved doing things together. Charley called Coke his “right hand man,” from building and remodeling several homes to casting a line into their favorite fishing hole. In their later years, they enjoyed taking trips together and went to Hawaii, Alaska and the Mexican Riviera. Charley enjoyed taking care of his yard, and going on ATV adventures.
Charley was a master mechanic, carpenter, and jack-of-all-trades. Charley was self-taught in his skills and talents. He had the remarkable ability to take apart something complicated, figure out how all the pieces worked together, fix it and make it work. He was ambitious and hardworking, having worked many jobs throughout his lifetime, even having multiple jobs at the same time. His first job was setting bowling pins at the Finlen Hotel at the young age of 10. In his early years, he worked at the Pay-N-Save, where he met his wife and their courtship started. He used his talents as a carpenter and mechanic at many jobs throughout Montana and Idaho, including various mines, mills, and manufacturing plants. Unbelievably, in his spare time he was always tinkering on a car or two.
He will be missed dearly for many reasons. His talents he freely shared, from fixing cars, home repairs, renovations, teaching his grandkids how to build things, and having an ample supply of bubble gum, hard candy, pop, and stories from his past. He was the family’s go-to mechanic. He was a skilled woodcraftsman, making beautiful pieces of furniture and cabinetry that have pride of place in family members’ homes. Charley has touched the lives of many by having a desire to help others with his gusto to jump in and fix things. We will miss his stories, words of wisdom, willingness to share the details of his latest projects, his subtle sense of humor, love for food and sharing a meal together, the twinkle in his eyes, slight smile, daily phone calls, and zest and love for life.
Charley is leaving behind his children: Chuck (Kathy) Winscot, Steve Winscot, Lynda (Gilbert) Marquez, Sue (Troy) Miller, Rick (Stormi) Winscot; sisters: Sharon (Gary and Ashlee) M c Whorter, Dianna (Bob) Erhardt, Tina (Tom) Wyciskala, Ann (Jeff) Benjamin; brother: Doug Winscot; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by brothers, Dan Winscot and Raymond Winscot, and now he joins Coke, his sweetheart of 56 years.
