Cleona Vera Simpson

March 26, 1925 — September 14, 2015

Cleona Vera Simpson, 90, of Rexburg, passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2015 at Madison Memorial Hospital with her children at her side. Cleona was born March 26, 1925 on the homestead farm in Archer to Melvin and Clara Hunsaker. She grew up in a farming family that raised spuds, hay and grain and enjoyed her family life with 2 brothers and a sister. After her schooling, she married her sweetheart Dan Weimer. They had 3 children and were building a life together when he died suddenly in 1947 in a farming accident. The family was later sealed for Time and All Eternity in The Idaho Falls Temple. She later remarried to Mark Simpson who passed away in 2001. Cleona loved gardening. She canned everything she could get her hands on and will be remembered for the many different jams and unforgettable raisin – filled cookies that she made. She loved to keep her hands busy. She crocheted countless afghans and pieced quilts together. All of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been blessed by her handy work. Many friends and family would pay her to sew and knit flannel receiving blankets and burp clothes for them. She had a special touch. Those that knew and loved Cleona well would know that she cherished Family first, Friends second, Flowers third, and of course, Flannel fourth! Cleona also had a hidden passion for basketball. She played on her school team and had a basketball hoop on her garage and loved to shoot hoops! She enjoyed sports in general. Her sons played little league and she loved going to all of their games. Outside of the home, she was also a very dedicated employee at Barrett’s dress shop in Rexburg for years. Cleona was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her religion was a strength to her, she remained active and clung to it her entire life. She found that she had a love for geneology, and enjoyed doing that with her sister, Arneta. She is survived by her children, Linda (Layel) Jackson, Gary (Julia) Weimer of Rexburg, and Dennis (Chris) Weimer of Rigby. Brothers, Calvin (Dorothy) Hunsaker of Tenino, WA. and Larry Hunsaker of Lyman. 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 2 great, great-grand children. Cleona was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dan Weimer, two grand sons, one great-grand son, and her sister Arneta. The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff of The Homestead in Rexburg, Idaho. A graveside service will be conducted by her bishop, Wade Huntsman, on Friday, Sept. 18th , at 11:00 a.m. at the Sugar City cemetery.
