Daniel Edward Boomgaarden, 81, of Rigby, passed away Sept. 3, 2020, at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center of complications of surgery.
Dan was born October 9, 1938 in Milton Freewater, Oregon, a son of Jacob Boomgaarden and Nettie Zacharias Boomgaarden. Dan was raised and attended school in Milton Freewater, Oregon. He continued his education at Truckee Meadows Community College and received an Associate’s Degree of Criminal Justice. Dan joined the Navy and served proudly for 20 years. After the military he worked as a Nevada State Highway Patrol Officer. He married Mary Ann Caskey on April 25, 1959 in Olathe, Kansas. They have traveled in every state and several foreign countries in their 61 years of marriage.
Dan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities and most notably with the Boy Scouts of America. He belonged to the V.F.W Post 1004 and American Legion Post 20 and was involved with the Pocatello model railroad club.
Dan was a model railroad junkie and had a train set in his basement that would occupy his time.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Boomgaarden of Rigby, daughters, Patricia (John) Leonhardt of Cottage Grove, WI, Cheryl (Neil) McGoldrick of Island Park, NY, Anna Marie (Kevin) McGoldrick of Babylon, NY, son Charles (Tamara) Boomgaarden of Rigby, brother, Dale (Cheryl) Boomgaarden of Gilroy, CA, 8 grandchildren, 13, great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Nettie Boomgaarden, sister, Anna Marie Boomgaarden, granddaughter, Courtney Ann Leonhardt, and great granddaughter Abigail Caldwell.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Dan’s name to the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1004 and Jefferson Veterans Team.
