Derena Dial Ricks, 71, of Rexburg, Idaho, passed away on Sept. 20, 2021 at her home surrounding by her family.
Derena was born on October 14, 1949, in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Joe Earl Dial and Martha Esther Harker Dial. She was raised in Shelley Idaho and graduated from Shelley High School. She also attended Ricks College and earned her associates degree in General Education.
While working at A&W, she had the pleasure of waiting on a hungry college student (Michael T Ricks), who after some persistence finally asked her out. Then on May 29, 1968 she married her eternal companion Michael T Ricks in the Idaho Falls Temple. They made their home in Rexburg, Idaho and were blessed with 8 children.
She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend to many. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she held many callings.
Derena enjoyed many different activities: Knitting many Christmas stockings for family members, sewing and stitching many quilts, she loved doing things with her hands from needles to crochet hooks many people had the opportunity to receive items made from Derena . She loved camping and spending time out at 7N Ranch for many summers. Supporting her grandchildren in all their activities whether it be sports, plays, singing, and band concerts. She also enjoyed playing card games with anyone who would play especially her grandchildren. Every year she looked forward to going on her annual sisters’ trips.
Derena is survived by her husband Michael T Ricks of Rexburg: daughters, Rebecca (Jim Duffin) of Ririe, Teresa (Steve D’Angelo) of Homosassa, Florida, Tina (Trent Kite) of Rigby, sons, George (Mitzi) Ricks of Rigby, Bradley Ricks of Blackfoot, Joseph (Holly) Ricks of Rigby, Roger (Trista) Ricks of Rigby, and Byron (Kelsie) Ricks of Rigby. Sisters, Dixie Stewart, Mary Polson, Jane Cottrell, Joyce Driscoll, Jolene Smallwood, Lois Fletcher, and Inis Landon, brothers, Terry Dial, Earl Dial, and David Dial. Twenty grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Gloria Cunningham.
A funeral service will be held Saturday September 25, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Rexburg 19 th Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (2332 West 2000 South, Rexburg, ID). The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 PM Friday, September 24, 2021 and from 9:30 to 10:45 AM Saturday September 25, 2021 both at the church. Interment will be at the Shelley Cemetery. We love you Mom!
