Derwin Edward Chase

March 10, 1921 — November 19, 2010

Derwin Edward Chase, 89 of Ririe, passed away November 19, 2010, at his home. Dirk was born March 10, 1921, to John Albert Chase and Florence Scott Chase. He was the sixth of eight children. He was raised in the Ririe Clark area and attended schools there. He went into the service in 1942 and served in the 2nd Air Force Unit. After leaving the service, Dirk returned to Ririe to work for his brother-in-law, R.E. Brown. He later acquired a dry farm of his own. On February 15, 1947, he married the love of his life, Betty June Ashbocker. Dirk spent most of his early years working hard on the farm. After six years of marriage, Dirk and Betty were able to adopt a baby boy, Steve, on October 15, 1953. He was the joy of Dirks life and went everywhere with him. As a family, they enjoyed many fishing and hunting trips, and also loved to travel the country whenever he could. Dirk also dabbled in the mining. He owned a claim in the Salmon Yellow Jacket area for about 10 years. During that time he gathered many good stories to entertain his family. He was an excellent storyteller and always had a funny tale for any occasion. Dirk is survived by his loving wife, Betty of Ririe, and many, many family members in the surrounding area. He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Chase, his parents, and by all of his brothers and sisters. Dirk was the last of his generation, a true legacy. He will be missed by all. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at the Ririe Stake Center, with Bishop Kenneth Anderson, conducting. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Monday evening and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., prior to services, both at the stake center. Burial will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery, under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
