Donna Briggs Scarborough

Donna Briggs Bray Scarborough departed this earth December 10, 2012, succumbing to natural causes at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Donna was born February 7, 1927, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Charles Francis and Edna Grace Browning Briggs. She graduated from Idaho Falls High School and shortly after met her sweetheart and future husband, Daniel Paul Scarborough, a handsome young Marine just home from serving in the Pacific theatre of World War II. After marrying on February 8, 1946 in Dillon, Montana they moved to Casper, Wyoming where they lived for four years. Two daughters were born there, Maureen on December 15, 1946, and Daneen on April 15, 1950. Dan was then called back into the Marine Corps for the Korean War. During that time they lived on several military bases, until 1955. Unhappy with military life, Donna asked for a divorce which was granted in 1955. She lived with her daughters in Idaho Falls until 1959 when they purchased a three-acre sand hill in Jameston, east of Shelley, where she made a home for her family for the next thirty plus years. In 1957 Dan married his second wife, Elma Messenger, and continued his service in the Marine Corps. Donna married her second husband Edwin Leo Bray in 1977. There were no children from either Donna’s or Dan’s second marriages. After several years both Dan’s and Donna’s second spouses both passed away. Dan returned to Idaho Falls to be close to his daughters. Soon he and Donna grew close again, remarrying September 19, 1992. After Donna underwent several back surgeries, they mutually decided they could no longer manage the workload of their Jameston property. They purchased a manufactured home which they moved next door to the home of their daughter Maureen in Roberts, just in time for the flood of 1997. Donna’s zest for life radiated to all who knew her. She worked successfully for several banks in Idaho Falls for over 25 years, but her passion and true calling was working with her family and in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Sunday School, the Young Women, at girl’s camp, and wrote numerous roadshows. Donna touched and inspired many lives through her, teaching, creative skills and service. She loved to compile family histories, write poetry, hunt, fish, camp, ride horses, search for rocks, and play various sports. Donna was preceded in death by her parents; second husband, Leo Bray; brothers, Lucine and Heber (Mary Lou); sisters, Alta and Lawana (Glen) Vlaanderen step-son, Roy Bray. She is survived by her husband, Dan; brother, Doyle (Valerie) Briggs; children, Maureen (Dorian) Matheson, Daneen (George) Bailey; step daughter, Phyllis (Gus) Likes, grandchildren, Mateo, Quinn, and Mya Matheson; Craig, Jason, Brian, Travis, Daniel, Shanda, Joshua and Jennifer Bailey and 16 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Dr. Scott Taylor and the staff at Hospice of Eastern Idaho and recent caregivers, Lisa and Richard Casper and Valerie Rominger. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012, at the Roberts 2nd Ward, 663 North 2858 East. Friends and family may gather there from 9:00-10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be at Annis Little Butte Cemetery, directed by Eckersell Funeral Home.
