Eldon Clarence Scott of Annis, Idaho, passed away peacefully at home on December 15, 2025. He was 92 years old. Eldon was born December 1, 1933 in Annis, Idaho. He was the youngest child of Clarence Lee and Vea Atkinson Scott’s five children. Eldon grew up on a farm. He attended the Annis little school house until the 8th grade. He learned a lot from his teacher, Mr. Bennett, and enjoyed playing softball (pitch & second base); skiing down the little Annis butte during lunch hour; hockey, and marble competitions. During the summer months, he also loved swimming in the canal; movies in Rigby; roller skating; fishing (in the slough, dry bed, and river); picnicking; duck hunting; and deer hunting. Eldon was an excellent student and graduated from Rigby High School in 1951.
The following year when Eldon was still 18 years old, he bought 35 acres (the O.J. Carr farm) across the road from his Dad’s place. He went to work improving and farming his newly acquired land. One Saturday night, Eldon attended a dance at the St. Anthony Armory where he met Maureen Schwendiman from Newdale. He liked her company and continued asking her out to go dancing, roller skating, and to the movies. The couple had a lot of fun together. They married on October 21, 1955, in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. The newlyweds settled in Annis where they created a life together. Eldon worked the farm in the summer and at a potato warehouse in Lewisville in the winter. They paid for things as they went along. Over the years, Eldon and Maureen purchased more farm land and added a dairy next to their house. Eldon milked cows until 1991. They were blessed with five children: Douglas; Deborah; Rory; Jerry; Todd.
The family worked hard and played hard. The Scott family enjoyed the outdoors, huckleberry picking, hunting in the fall, snowmobiling, camping and fishing the South Fork of the Snake River, Pack Saddle Lake, and Henry’s Lake. Eldon was an avid fisherman and delighted in discussing the best types of tackle to catch a big fish. He took his sons on several trips to the Oregon coast to deep-sea fish in the ocean. He went Salmon fishing in Alaska four different times. Some of his sons, his daughter, a son-in-law, and 3 grandsons were able to share the experiences with him. In later years, Eldon and Maureen explored sites in Hawaii, Canada, and the ancient ruins of Mexico. In the early 2000’s, they built a cabin in Island Park and spent happy years fishing in their boat on Henry’s Lake with family.
Eldon served in the community as a member of the ASC Committee; SCS Committee; FHA Committee; and the Co-op Board of Directors. As a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Eldon held various positions throughout his lifetime: faithful home teacher; Sunday School teacher, stake Young Men’s presidency counselor; Elders Quorum secretary and 2nd counselor; Deacon’s quorum advisor; Scout Master twice, where he took the scouts on 50-mile hiking/fishing trips to the Big Horn Craigs, the White Clouds; and a 100-mile horseback ride to Copper Basin. He was a counselor in two different bishoprics; 1st (Bishop Gail Sheppard) and 2nd (Bishop Ted Hanson) Eldon served as the Bishop of the Annis ward for over 5 years during which time he performed 12 marriages and conducted 20 funerals. Eldon and Maureen served in the Idaho Falls temple as baptistry supervisors for 10 years; then ordinance workers for almost 4 years. They served a mission to Cove Fort, Utah.
Eldon lived his entire life near the base of the little Annis buttes. He appreciated simple pleasures and treasured family life. He spent his time building the things that matter most, both on earth and for the eternities. He will be remembered as a humble man of integrity, a loving husband, devoted father, fun grandpa, and wise great-grandfather. His life, influence, love, and legacy will bless his posterity forever. Eldon is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, of 70 years; Children: Douglas (Allison) Scott; Deborah Reed; Rory (Janet); Scott; Jerry (Susan) Scott; Todd (Shaundel) Scott; 19 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way).
