Ethel Marie Higley Hoagland, 100 of San Bernardino, California passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Lights Rancho Linda Living Center. She celebrated her 100th birthday with a party given for her; she had told friends she hoped to celebrate her 100th birthday before she died.
She was born February 1, 1913 in Salem, Idaho to Aaron Luther Higley and Marion Floreda Alvord Higley. The family later moved to Ririe, Idaho where she received her schooling. She married Jack Hoagland November 17, 1931; their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls, LDS Temple. They lived in Idaho Falls and were blessed with a daughter, Norma Jean; she died on her first birthday. Ethel worked for Ferrell’s in Idaho Falls for several years. After the death of her husband, she moved to California to be close to her brother, Arthur.
Ethel was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she always looked forward to having her Visiting Teachers and Home Teachers come visit her. Ethel was such a special person; smiling, happy, and friendly with a positive attitude about everyone and everything. She and Jack spent a lot of time fishing; they especially enjoyed Henry’s Lake Outlet where they always had the best luck and could stock their freezer full of good fish.
She is survived by nieces, Sharon (Hyrum) Bush of Rexburg, and Diana Seagle, great-nieces, Brenda (John) Burrows of Idaho Falls, Sarah Bush, of Rexburg, great-nephews, Rick Bush of Pocatello, David (Tammy) Bush of Las Vegas, NV, and a cousin, Dorothy Chase of Idaho Falls, and 3 great-great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her baby daughter, husband, parents, a sister Marsha, and two brothers, Arthur Higley, and Faye Higley.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery. The family will receive friend beginning at 1:00 p.m., at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 W. Main Street, Rigby. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.eckersellfuneralhome.com
