Fern Wilcox Virgin, of Idaho Falls, died peacefully at her daughter's home Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004. She was 89 years old and a member of the LDS Church. Fern was born Aug. 10, 1915, in Sunnydell, Idaho, to David Oswell Wilcox and Nessie Gilbert Wilcox. She was the beloved sister of six brothers, whose mother died early in their life. She grew up in Sunnydell and went on to attend school at Ricks College and Idaho State University.
Fern married Wesley J. Virgin in Blackfoot, Idaho on July 23, 1939. From their union came one son and six daughters. Their son, Jan, was taken from them at the tender age of 10. Her thirst for adventure and knowledge was unquenchable and she traveled far and wide. She loved to read and was active in many study and reading groups. At the spry age of 60, she took up backpacking and hiked until she was 80. She had an appreciation for nature that was unparalleled and saw beauty in all things. Fern's life was one of service and compassion, touching multitudes of people. She visited folks in the nursing homes, served as a Pink Lady, and eventually became one of Idaho Falls' first hospice volunteers. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, we ask for donations to be made to the Hospice of Eastern Idaho (1810 Moran Street) who cared for her so graciously. She is survived by six daughters, three brothers, 21 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren and counting. Survivors include Marjene (Glen) Erikson of Rexburg, Julie Ann (Val) Tyler of Rigby, Deon V. (Kent) Romrell of Idaho Falls, Vicky Marie (Bill Brosh) of New York City, Pamela Virgin of Aiken, S.C., and Lisa Kay Virgin of Idaho Falls; Clifford of St. George, Utah, Earl of Sunnydell and Verl of Blackfoot. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and three brothers. The family will visit with friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 West Main St., in Rigby. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Archer Sunnydell LDS Chapel, 201 West 8000 South, Sunnydell. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery in Archer.
