Florence Agnes Gilchrist, 92, of Roberts, died December 27, 2009.
She was born September 22, 1917, in Roberts, Idaho, to Otis Leroy Hand and Clara Harris Hand. She graduated from Roberts High School as well as Henager Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the first Jefferson County woman to enlist in the Armed Forces (Woman’s Army Corp). She was also the first woman of Jefferson County to go overseas in any war and to receive a commendation. She was stationed in Oxford, England and Paris, France.
She married Eliot Gilchrist February 3, 1946, in Roberts, ID. They raised their two sons on the family farm.
She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by her children; Richard (Glenna) Gilchrist, of Roberts, Bill Gilchrist, of San Diego, CA, two grandchildren, Emily Hoadley (Stephen), of Meridian, ID, Craig Gilchrist, of Roberts, ID, and two great grandchildren, Jack and Clara Hoadley; and nephew Gene Kuharski (Michelle) of SLC, UT.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eliot Gilchrist, her parents, and a sister, Helen Kuharski.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2009, at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 West Main Street, Rigby; the family will visit with friends one hour prior to services, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Market Lake Cemetery, under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby with Military Rites by Jefferson’s Veterans Team and The Idaho Honor Guard.
