George “Doug” Douglas Oliver Jr., 65, of Rigby, died June 28, 2009, at his home. He was born January 24, 1944, to George Douglas Oliver, and Jane Inez Friel in Camp White, Oregon.
He was raised in Long Island, New York, and St. Petersburg, Florida. He graduated from Dixie Holland High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. On April 3, 1965, he married Nola Rae Newman, in Idaho Falls, Idaho; their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on May 31, 1967. He served in the US Navy from 1965 to 1971 and was a Nuclear Machinist on submarines. He also worked at Argon for 2 years. He worked for the US Navy for 8 years, the Bureau of Reclamation at Grand Cooley Dam Corps of Engineers for 21 years. At Dayton Washington he worked at Little Goose Dam. He then moved to Hermiston Oregon and worked for McNary Dam and Grant County P.U.D. at Wanapum Dam. He retired from the Corps of Engineers in 1999. He moved to Rigby in 2003, and one of his favorite things was driving the Disabled American Veterans Van to the VA hospital in Salt Lake City for 5 years.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as Elders Quorum President, Building Security, Temple Ordinance Worker, Sunday School Superintendent, and Ward and Stake Clerk.
Doug enjoyed woodworking, photography, fishing, camping, the Oregon Coast, computers, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Nola Oliver, of Rigby, daughters, Kimberly Ann (Mark) Layton, of Rigby, Susan Christine (Robert) Hooper, of Layton, UT, Catherine Brooke (Nathan) Williams, of Ogden, UT, mother, Jane Oliver, of Ocala, FL, a sister, Jane Ann (Billy) Cox, of Lake Worth, FL, brothers, Gregory Duncan (Dixie) Oliver, of Lake Lusa FL, Gordan Drew (Cindi) Oliver, of Fredericksburg, PA, and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, George Douglas Oliver.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Perry Ward Chapel, with Bishop Ben Myler, conducting. The family will visit with friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday at Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Milo Cemetery, under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
