James Lee Herring, age 79, of Menan, passed away at his home in Menan Sunday June 29, 2014.
Jim was born December 30, 1934 in San Bernardino, California a son to Charles Wm. Herring and Bessie Wheelock Herring. He was raised in California, Oklahoma and Iowa. He married Charlene Anderson January 29, 1954 in Sioux City, Iowa.
Jim was not a tall man, 5’6” according to him, but 5’5” in the doctor’s office. In his advanced age, he shrunk, he told the nurse the tape on the wall was wrong and they should fix it.
He loved his family and animals were his passion. Binoculars in every room in case he spotted a duck with babies, a deer, or best of all a moose. About a week ago he saw a mama wood-duck and 13 little ones. Every day he put out bird seed, food for the feral cats and left-over’s for the coon and her six kids!
He loved to fish and had all the equipment to prove it. He was also fond of cage fighting, a hobby which Charlene didn’t share. He took great pride in his home, especially in the yard. He planted and nurtured his trees, bushes and flowers. His lawn was his pride.
He moved to Menan in 2004 and loved everything about this area, even the wind. Meeting people was part of who he was. He was never shy and the most comfortable in his skin of anyone I know. “He was who he was” would be the saying of his life.
He is survived by his wife Charlene of Menan, a daughter Roxanne (Bill) Nicholas of Rigby, a sister Barbara Lane of Genoa, Utah and a brother Tom (Loriane) Herring of Riverside, California, 2 grandsons Bill and Chris Nicholas and 2 great granddaughters Elexis and Allison Nicholas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held Saturday July 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Annis Little Butte Cemetery under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
