Joan Bates Barnes, 76, of Rigby, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at her home. She was born May 16, 1932 in Rigby, Jefferson County Idaho, to Veral Veness Bates and Olive M. Godfrey Bates. She graduated from Idaho Falls High School and attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah.
She married Marcus Walker Barnes of Hamer, Idaho on March 19, 1954 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Joan enjoyed being a wife and mother; survivors include her husband, 10 children, 57 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed doing genealogy, and cooking. She was a member of the “Daughters of the Utah Pioneers”. She served two LDS Missions with her husband, one to Tarawa Kiribati, for three years and the second mission to Toronto, Canada. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 24, 2008, at the Clark LDS Church (198 North 4300 East, Rigby).
The family will visit with friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday evening at the Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby, and Friday morning just before the service from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Clark Church. Burial will be in the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.
