Joel Albert Johnson

Joel Albert Johnson, age 90, of Rigby passed away on August 25, 2018 at Sage Grove Assisted Living.

Joel was born October 6, 1927, in Idaho Falls, Idaho a son of Albert and Edna Johnson. He was the second born of four children. He grew up in Rigby, Idaho and graduated from Rigby High School.  He was active in football and basketball.  Joel served in the United States Army for two years.

Joel married Dorma Andreasen on October 30, 1953. They were blessed with five children, Christa, Darla Valerie, Joel Jr. and Mark. They were later divorced.  On May 12, 1989 Joel married June Calvin.  Joel helped raise June’s three children, Rodney, Shauna and Bradley.

Joel worked as a full-time meat cutter, he also owned Jan’s Café in Idaho Falls as well as The Inn Café in Rigby. He later started a business with his sons; J & J Hearth.  He enjoyed raising pigeons, going to coffee and visiting with friends, and camping and fishing.  He especially loved his dogs;  his buddy Tyke was favorite.

Joel was a very hard-working man who loved his family deeply. He will be remembered by his genuine smile, warm hugs, and his fun-loving personality; he loved to tease everybody.  He was a handsome man who would win people over with his smile.

Joel is survived by his wife June C. Johnson of Rigby, children; Christa Horkley (Justin Hamberlin) of Rigby, Valerie Johnson Tremelling (Greg) of Idaho Falls, Joel Johnson Jr. (Jane), Mark Johnson (Pauline), both of Rigby, step-children; Rodney D Calvin (Jennifer) of Rigby, Shauna L. Wight (Bruce) of Hall, Montana, Bradley J. Calvin of Rigby, 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Darla Jo, sisters, Janis Blair and Elaine Byrne, brother, Larry Kay Johnson, and step-brother, Frank Myler.

Funeral service will be held Friday, August 31, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Garfield 3 rd Ward LDS Chapel, (5 North 3900 East, Rigby). The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, and prior services Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. at the church.  Burial will be at the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.  Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.eckersellfuneralhome.com.
