John Alvin Berky Jr., 87, of Rigby, Idaho passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
John was born March 8, 1927 in Oaklyn, New Jersey to John Alvin Berky Sr. and Katie Margaret DeLong. He Grew up and attended schools in Pennsylvania.
John married Patricia Black, September 23, 1950 in Pennsylvania. They later divorced. He later married Colleen Delia Call June 15, 1973 in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania and they were later sealed in the Washington D.C. LDS Temple, October 23, 1973.
He served in the US Navy for 12 years during WWII and during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable release, he attended Temple University in Philadelphia and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology. With his degree, John worked at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia for 25 years.
John was an active member of the LDS Church. He was active in the scouting program. He served in the bishopric in Jarrettown, Pennsylvania and in the High Priest Group. He served a mission in the Idaho Falls Temple Family History Center and he served a full time mission with his wife in Louisville, Kentucky.
He enjoyed gardening and golf. He served on the Board of Directors for the Rigby Senior Citizens Center.
John is survived by his wife, his two daughters Kim (Perry) Christensen of Spanish Fork, UT; Brenda (Joe) Baker of Oxford, MA; son Gregory (Patti) Berky of Bellfont, PA; sister Yvonne (Herb) Koeger of Doylestown, PA; two brothers Ralph (Georgia Anne) Berky of Pennsylvania; Gene (Marilyn) Berky of Conshohocken, PA; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and two sons.Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 28, 2014 at the Rigby LDS Stake Center 258 W 1st N in Rigby. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Sunday at Eckersell Memorial Chapel and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., prior to services at the church. Burial will be held at the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.
