John Casper Furniss

John Casper Furniss, 84 of Ammon, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. He was born October 1, 1928, in Bates Idaho to William Furniss and Rhoda M. Moulton Furniss. He was raised in the Bates and Driggs areas and graduated from Teton High School. He continued his education at Utah State University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry, and a minor in Chemistry. He enlisted in the US Air Force and served in Okinawa, Japan as a Radar Operator. On June 11, 1952, he married Verla Christoffersen in the Idaho Falls, LDS Temple; they were blessed with 5 children. John worked as a Chemistry Technician for Westinghouse at the INL and then as a Chemist at Idaho Fresh Pak. John was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he served as a Temple Ordnance Worker in the Idaho Falls Temple for 21 years. He and Verla served fulltime missions to the Humanitarian Center in Idaho Falls and to the Idaho Falls Cannery. He was a member of the VFW, and an EIRMC Volunteer. John enjoyed camping and horseback trail riding; and rarely missed an early morning meeting at Bob’s Kwik Serve in Rigby. He is survived by his wife, Verla Furniss, of Ammon, daughters, Sharyn Rose Curtis, of Idaho Falls, Susan Jean (Jerry) Scott, of Annis, Anna Lee Furniss, of Denver Colorado, sons, Reid J. Furniss, of Logan, Utah, Cory Vernon (Toni) Furniss, of Rigby, brother, Bud (Jean) Furniss, of Rupert, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren with 2 on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, 11 brothers and sisters, and 1 granddaughter, Shaura Niederer. Memorial contributions may be made to the LDS Humanitarian Fund or to the LDS Mission Fund. Funeral services will be held at the Ammon 11th Ward LDS Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, with Bishop Farrell Steiner conducting. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday evening and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., prior to services, both at the church. Burial will be in the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
