Joseph Harding Sievers

Joseph Harding Sievers, 89, of Garfield, passed away Friday, March 25, 2011, at the Homestead Assisted Living Center of Rigby. He was born December 8, 1921, in Milo, Idaho to Pope Leo Sievers and Melba Ellen Nelson Sievers. He was raised and attended schools in Milo and Ucon. He enjoyed and excelled in track and field. He served in WWII as a Machinist Mate Third Class in the U. S. Navy on a maintenance ship in the Phillipines and on a coastal patrol ship off the California Coast and was a Master Gunner. He also attended trade school at NYA (National Youth Association), and worked in the ship yards in Bremerton Washington. On June 3, 1944, he married Lova May Briggs of Lewisville, in Santa Cruz, California; their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on February 9, 1945. Together they had 7 children. Joseph was an excellent farmer and was named Barley Grower of the Year in 1989. Joseph is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he enjoyed serving in the Temple Baptistery and the Garfield High Priest Group, Sunday School President and Home Teacher. He loved to camp and fish with his family and hunt with his sons and grandsons. He knew how to work hard and play hard, and taught his children to do the same. The family expresses their gratitude to Aspen Home Health and the people at The Homestead Assisted Living Center of Rigby for their excellent care of our Dad. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lova May Sievers, of Idaho Falls, daughters, Virginia Ann (Vaughn) Asper, of Coltman, Idaho, Jolene (Leston) Drake, of Hyde Park, Utah, sons, Joseph Marden (Myrna) Sievers, of Rigby, Idaho, Gregory Briggs (Debbie)Sievers, of Lewisville, Idaho, John Blaine (LeAnn) Sievers, of Bothell, Washington, Robert Louis (Denise) Sievers, of Kuna, Idaho, sister, Jean (Verl) Rheinhold, of Eugene, Oregon, brother, Marley Sievers, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, 30 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Karlene Loosli, a sister, Emma Ball, brothers, Arthur Sievers, Merrill Sievers, and Francis Sievers. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the Garfield LDS Church, 71 N. 3700 E., Rigby, with Bishop Kent Bradley, Conducting. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 W. Main Street, Rigby, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ucon Cemetery, under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
