Kenneth James Shuman

Kenneth James Shuman, age 63, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away Friday, July 24, 2026, at Birmingham VA Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.

Ken was born October 11, 1962, in Salina Kansas, the son of Curtis Foy Shuman and Sheril Gay Anderson Shuman.

He graduated from Bear River High School in Tremonton, Utah. After graduation he honorably served in the United States Air Force. During his distinguished Air Force career, he served as a combat medic both at home and overseas, including deployments for Operations Just Cause, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War. He answered his nation’s call with extraordinary courage, serving with distinction for more than two decades. His military decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal (four awards), Air Force Achievement Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with three campaign credits, Kuwait Liberation Medals from both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Government of Kuwait, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Combat Readiness Medal (four awards), the Air Force Good Conduct Medal (five awards), the National Defense Service Medal (two qualifying periods), and numerous additional ribbons recognizing overseas service, professional military education, weapons marksmanship, and exemplary conduct. After 23 years, he retired from active duty with the rank of Master Sergeant. He then continued his career of devoted service to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces as an Administrative Officer with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Birmingham, Alabama.

His career was marked by his selfless sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to protecting and caring for his fellow service members, earning the profound respect of those who served alongside him.

Ken believed that character was life’s greatest legacy. He passed on to his children the values his own father taught him: to lead with compassion, live with integrity, remain loyal to those they loved, be generous with what they had, face adversity with courage, accept accountability for their actions, and always strive to do what is right.

He is survived by his daughter Amanda Denaburg (Matthew); his son Bryan Shuman; their mother Barbara; his two sisters, Gay and Vicki; and his three brothers, Joel, David and Bryan.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Sheril, and his beloved wife, Shannon.

The family’s graveside service was held at Valley View Cemetery in Bothwell, Utah, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, with military honors provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.
