Laura Sherburne Marler, 97, of Rexburg, Idaho, died Friday June, 25, 2010, at her home.
She was born August 17, 1912, in Maynard, Massachusetts the second daughter of Leander Crosby Sherburne and Dorothy Alden Clark Sherburne. She was raised and attended school in New England. On April 21, 1946 she married George Dewey Marler in Denver, Colorado. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on May 7, 1952. They had two daughters, Barbara and Lela.
Prior to her marriage Laura worked as a librarian and in insurance work. After coming west in 1946, Laura worked in Yellowstone National Park for many years in various clerical positions. She did extensive editing and manuscript typing for her husband, Dr. George D. Marler.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an extensive reader and knowledgeable in many areas. She had an amazing memory. She recited poetry to fill empty hours and even recited a poem, “ L’Envoi” by Rudyard Kipling on the day of her death. Her father was a sea-captain and she was fascinated by the tall ships and the ocean. She loved the outdoors. Bird watching and gardening were favorite hobbies.
She is survived by her daughter, Lela Marler (Ray) Gordon, of Rexburg, 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, sister and 1 great-granddaughter.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 2, 2010, at the Lyman 2nd Ward LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m., to 10:45 a.m., prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery, under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
