Leland Wells Barney

Leland Wells Barney, 82, of Lewisville, died at his home Thursday, May 18, 2006. Leland was born July 28, 1923 at Lewisville, Idaho a son of Wells Barney and Blanche Lorene Fife Barney. He attended schools in Lewisville, graduated from Midway High School and attended one year at the University of Idaho in Moscow. He served with the United States Marines during WWII in the South Pacific and China. He married Lucy May Hanson, June 12, 1952 in Lewisville. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple March 10, 1965. He farmed in the Lewisville area all of his life. He served as President of the Shire Association, and was inducted to the Horseman Hall of Fame. He was a member of the National Cutter Association and had been a member of the Jefferson County Sheriffs Posse. He served as a member of the Lewisville Cemetery Board for 40 years. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He raised and enjoyed showing Shire Draft Horses with his family in the intermountain area and was a horse 4h leader for several years and enjoyed working with the youth in the area. He is survived by four daughters: Toni Lee (Ron) Morgan of Idaho Falls, Debra Sue (Randy) Olaveson of Lewisville, Nola J. Barney of Flagstaff, Arizona and Lora Ann (Gary) Kearsley of Lewisville, four sons: Gary P. (Faith) Barney of Anaheim, California, Richard L. (Diana) Barney of Lewisville, Ray (Mary Louise) Barney of Sugar City, Idaho and Steven S. Barney of Tetonia, Idaho, two sisters: Shirley Rosen of Idaho Falls and Arlene (Arvel) Allmen of Thatcher, Idaho, 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife and a daughter Kathryn Hyde. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 22, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. in the Lewisville 1st Ward LDS Chapel with Bishop James Gneiting officiating. The family will visit with friends on Sunday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby and on Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Lewisville Cemetery. Military rites will be preformed by the Jefferson Veterans Team.
