Leon Haugh

Leon Haugh, 83, of Rigby, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2006 at Pine Brook Assisted Living Center in Rigby, Idaho. Leon was born March 3, 1923, at Readstown, Wisconsin to Rudolph L. Haugh and Hattie Ora Williams Haugh. He graduated from Viola, Wisconsin High School where he was captain and quarterback of his football teams, and won state medals in track events. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1941 and served during the Second World War. He later served with the Rigby, Idaho 116th Army Engineers. Leon married Sarah Fullmer of Teton Valley on 5 June 1943, at Tucson, Arizona. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan, Utah Temple in 1950. After the war, they moved to Rexburg, and later to Rigby where they engaged in raising mink for 14 years. He served as President of the Idaho Fur Breeders Association and won numerous awards for the quality of his furs. In 1963 he began working for the US Postal Service where he worked until his retirement in 1983. During this time he received several awards for superior service and performance. He was well liked by the public and always met them with a smile and a cheery word. Leon was an avid fisherman and hunter. Later in life he became interested in rocks and geology and became well educated in this field. He loved to prospect and hunt for special rocks and enjoyed cutting and polishing them. He had the ability to see beauty in even little things. Leon was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as Sunday School Teacher, Counselor in the Young Men’s and the Elders Quorum, Ward Clerk under 2 Bishops, and Secretary in the High Priest Group. He served as Ward Employment Specialist and worked for years in the Church Home Extraction Program. Survivors include his wife Sarah of Rigby, 4 children: Denyse (David) Munson of Rigby, Janette (Dennis) Stevens of Idaho Falls, Galen Haugh of Rigby, and Renee’ (Kent) Allen of Kimberly, Idaho; 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Cleo Haugh of Mauston, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Funeral services will be held Monday May 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the Rigby 11th Ward LDS Chapel, 71 North 3700 East, Rigby. The family will visit with friends at the church on Sunday May 21, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Cache-Clawson Cemetery under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
