Lorna Claudine Cottle Shippen 90, of Menan, Idaho was born October 5, 1933 in Lewisville, Idaho to Lyle Henry Cottle and Winnie Hoggan Cottle. She attended elementary school in Menan and Lewisville, and then attended Midway HS until it burned down in early 1949, in which they joined with Rigby HS. She and the other 4 L’s Lorna, Luana, Leola and Larene had a great time together, dressing alike and having all kinds of fun.  Lorna graduated from Rigby HS in 1951, then attended one semester at BYU on a scholarship, then came home to marry the love of her life W Ronald Shippen. They were married February 8, 1952 in the Idaho Falls Temple and were steadfast and dedicated to each other until his passing 64 years later.

Ronald and Lorna worked hard together, and farmed and ranched on the now 145 year old continuously operating property in Menan, Idaho. Throughout the years, Lorna worked helping Ronald in many capacities and she especially enjoyed the many years cooking meals for the hay, sugar beet, sheep and cattle crews and loved every moment of it. She was a great cook, and her children and grandchildren will greatly miss her fantastic cooking.

Ronald and Lorna were the parents of 3 children that they loved and cherished. Ryan Ronald (Sherrie) of Menan, Ronda Marie (Kerry) of Menan, and Kent Lyle (Amy Ringholz) of Jackson, Wyoming. Lorna had 16 grandchildren, 1 who preceded her in death and 19 great grandchildren. She was proud of and loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with all her heart. She is also survived by her 3 siblings who were an important part of her life, Jay Cottle (Orial) of Menan, Jan Gleason of Draper Utah, and Barbara Hancock (Dean) of Menan. Also important to her was her aunt and great friend through her whole 90 years Luana Widerberg, and the multiple nieces and nephews of this tight knit family, that she loved and enjoyed.

Lorna cherished her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in multiple Ward and Stake callings, including Primary President, Relief Society President, Young Women President, Stake Relief Society and an advisor in Ricks College 1st Stake. Overall though, she always said her favorite calling was teaching primary.

Lorna loved her rides with Ronald as they jumped in the truck to check water and feed on the spring range at Sage Junction, Sand Creek and summer range in Island Park. She often said if it wasn’t for these rides, and trips to bull and horse sales around the west, she wouldn’t have traveled anywhere.

Lorna and Ronald were part of a special “club” of 12 couples since High School that met together monthly for over 60 years and had a great time. Together they traveled to Hawaii, Caribbean and other fun adventures closer to home. Lorna is survived by only 2 of those club members, Luana Widerberg and Helen Jones.

Lorna had many friends, and made sure to remember birthdays and special occasions for all of them. For 25 plus years she walked in the mall and/or Stake Center with some of her close friends and said they “walked the walk and talked the talk.”  Lorna loved doing painting, ceramics, and calligraphy with her friend Joyce Riggs, and always decorated her home with her art and other beautiful things she loved, and never missed putting up special decorations for each holiday. Lorna also had a love of shopping sales, especially in Dilliards, Lamonts and Macy’s, where she found great deals, lots of pretty clothes and things she enjoyed.

Other things she loved doing throughout her life was playing games with family, and doing her daily puzzles, especially Sudoku, which kept her sharp until the end. She loved watching game shows, Hallmark movies, and she especially loved Antique Roadshow.

Sincere thanks goes to Hands of Hope and Hospice for the extra help and care they gave Lorna through her final years.

Lorna will be missed by the community, church and family. As parents pass, the barriers to eternity are stripped away and we assume their place-we have enormous shoes to fill.
