Lyle H. Cottle, age 92, of Menan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at his home in Menan from causes incident to age. He was surrounded by members of his loving family.
He was born October 11, 1914, at the family home in Menan, the middle of nine children born to William Stephen and Elizabeth Rawson Cottle. He grew up in Menan and lived there his entire life, except for a few early married years in Lewisville. He attended schools at Menan and Midway. While at Midway Lyle met his sweetheart, Winnie Hoggan, and they were married December 30, 1931, in Menan. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Winnie died April 24, 2005.
Lyle worked at Canner’s Seed in Lewisville for twenty years before buying the family farm in Menan in 1952. Farming was Lyle’s love. He took pride in growing beautiful crops and raising beef cattle. He was chosen Jefferson County Conservation Farmer in 1984. Lyle served for many years on the boards of Federal Land Bank and Menan Co-op.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1966 he was called as bishop of the Menan First Ward and served for 8 years. Many lasting relationships were developed between him and his ward members. He also served on the Menan Stake High Council and in numerous other callings. He had a strong testimony of the Gospel and found joy in serving and helping other people.
Lyle was a man who touched the lives of people wherever he went. The world was a better place because of him. He was a devoted husband and father, whose family is grateful for his example, encouragement and love. Lyle is survived by four children, Jan Gleason of Sandy, Utah, Lorna (Ronald) Shippen, Jay (Orial) Cottle and Barbara (Dean) Hancock, all of Menan; 18 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Esther (Gail) Mathews of Idaho Falls. He was preceded in death by his wife Winnie of 73 years, five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 28, at the Menan Second Ward Chapel with Bishop Eric Beck officiating. The family will visit with friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the church and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. before the services. Burial will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel of Rigby.
