Listen to Obituary

Jose M. Montalvan, 84, passed away comforted by his children, grandchildren, and his faithful pets in Terreton Idaho, August 18, 2026.

Keen on small towns, Joe was born in La Cañada, a farming town in the State of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Joe was raised tough and in the old ways by his Father Cipriano Montalvan and Mother Maria de la Cruz Uresti, being one of 13 children.

He soon made his way to the great State of Idaho where he met and married the love of his life Virginia Gonzales, from Pocatello Idaho. Joe and Virginia would raise five children together: Christina, Cipriano, Miguel, Jessica, and Lucy. Joe, the patriarch, was also a grandfather to nine grandchildren: Jose, Dari, Al, Amalia, Andres, Catherine, Alena, Pistol, and Angeliqua.

To know Joe was to know a man who lived a fulfilled life. A farmer who dedicated himself to chasing his runaway cows. A gardener who took pride in growing his own food and massive pumpkins. A puzzler who defended his magnificent pieces from house pets and his very own. And a genuinely great soul to all who grew to know him.

Joe, a devout Catholic, kept God in his heart and carried his faith with him unwavering to the end. Joe was a loving father and grandfather who showed tough love, but his effort, time, and sacrifices left no doubt that he loved us. There has never been another man who worked harder for the people he loved.

Joe will be dearly missed by his family, his friends, and his beloved animals, especially the pomeranians. Goodbyes are never easy, but his family finds comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through them.

Visitation will be held Thursday August 20th, at 7:00pm.  Services will be held Friday August 21st, 10:00am at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Terreton, Idaho. Followed by his internment at West Jefferson Memorial.

The Family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Heritage Home Health & Hospice for the compassionate care and support, as well as, Amparo, Daniel, Melissa, Cindy, and Dr. Wallace C. Baker.
