Martel LaVaughn Taylor, 85, of Rigby died Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Pinebrook Assisted Living Center in Rigby.
Martel was born February 26, 1928, in Idaho Falls to LaVaughn Leo Taylor and Alice Severson Taylor. He was raised and attended schools in the Grant area, graduating from Midway High School. On March 26, 1950 he married Claris Kinghorn in Rigby; they were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple November 22, 1950. Martel enjoyed farming and he worked in the potato industry for several years. In 1968 Martel and Robert Brown opened U & I Auto Trade and later owned and operated B & T Chevrolet on Main Street in Rigby. In 1977 Martel and Claris opened Taylor’s Quik Stop south of Rigby on Hwy 20.
Martel was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he served as a High Priest Group Leader, on the High Council in the Rigby Stake, as Stake Sunday School Counselor, and as a devoted Home Teacher. He was also a member of the Lions Club. Martel enjoyed traveling with his wife.
He is survived by his wife, Claris Kinghorn Taylor, of Rigby, daughter, Janell Wetherell, of Rigby, son, Steven K. (Nancy) Taylor, of Rigby, sister, Sharon (Ted) Zrelak, of Golita, CA, sister-in-law Linda Taylor, of Rigby 7 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Lyle D. Taylor, Boyd K. Taylor and Roger J. Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the Rigby Stake Center, 258 W. 1st N., Rigby, with Bishop Adam Hall, conducting. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 W. Main Street, Rigby and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery. Services are under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
