Melvin J Hall, 91, of Menan, Idaho, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Homestead Assisted Living in Rexburg, Idaho. Melvin was born in Tetonia, Idaho on September 23, 1926 to Earl Hall and Eva Stewart, where he was the oldest boy and second child out of eight children. When he was two years old, his family moved to Annis, Idaho where he grew up.
He attended school in Annis, Idaho and graduated from Midway High School in 1945. While there, he played football and graduated from LDS Seminary. Melvin was drafted into the US Army at the age of 19, from 1945-46 with the occupational forces in Germany, earning 2 medals while there.
After being discharged from the Army, Melvin moved back to Annis and worked there in potato houses for six years. He then moved to Armstead Montana to work on a ranch. While there, he met his eternal companion, Viola May Jensen. They were married July 9, 1954 in Dillon, Montana. Their marriage was later solemnized August 7,1964 in the Idaho Falls, Idaho LDS Temple. They had three children, Bruce William Hall, Brenda Sue Hintz, and Julie Ann Oveson.
After marrying, Melvin went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in Montana and worked there for twelve years. He then moved his family to Menan, Idaho and remained there for forty years. He spent most of the rest of his working years employed with the Menan Co-op. After retiring from the Co-op he worked for ten years as a custodian for the Menan LDS Church. Melvin was a High Priest and loved singing in the choir. He loved the church and serving. Some of his favorite callings were that of Scout Master, Young Men’s President, and Elder’s Quorum President.
Melvin also served for over twenty years in the Cub Scouting program, earning his Silver Beaver award. He enjoyed spending a week with his family and being trained at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Melvin was not able to serve an LDS mission when he was young, so it was a great blessing to serve a mission with Viola after their retirement. They served as missionaries for eighteen months at the Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2003-04.
After their mission, Viola and Melvin moved to Idaho falls for a brief period. As their health started to decline, they then moved to the Homestead Assisted living in Rexburg, where they would live for the last three years of their life together. Mel and Vi were married for 68 years. It was at the Homestead that they would pass away within a few short months of each other.
He is preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, Elmo, Wanda, Lindy, Shirley, and Maurine. Surviving him are one sister, Ranae, and one brother Ronald; his three children, eleven grandchildren, and 15 Great-Grandchildren.
