Orlando Leroy Smith, 84, of Ririe, Idaho died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 in Idaho Falls, Idaho
at the Idaho Falls Care Center.
Orlando was born July 15, 1917 at Rigby, Idaho, the son of George A. Smith and Eunice
Catherine Heyrend Smith. He grew up in the Poplar area East of Ririe on a farm homesteaded by
his grandfather. He attended school in Ririe, Idaho, He attended Utah State University, and
graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Orlando farmed in the Poplar area until his retirement in 1977.
He married Aletha Mae Reeder on December 17, 1939, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They had six
children. Aletha preceded him in death. He married Mary Burkhalter on August 23, 2001 in
Rigby, Idaho.
Orlando was very active. After retirement he spent winter months in Lake Havasu City, Arizona
where he was active in the Lake Havasu City Gem and Mineral Club. He loved fishing,
traveling, exercising, and reading. In addition, he was an avid rock hound and enjoyed
silversmithing and lapidary work. He belonged to the Rolling Russets Chapter of the Good Sam
R.V. Club, the Lions Club, and was a founding member of the Pine Bay Boat Club
He is survived by his wife; Mary Smith of Ririe, Idaho. Four daughters; Anita Smith Creer of
Brea, California, Jane Smith (Bill) Murray of Pleasant View, Utah, Catherine Louise Smith of
Idaho Falls, Idaho and Cynthia Smith of Ririe, Idaho. Two sons; Brian Ray Smith of Mt Clair
Pennsylvania and Cort O. (Cindy) Smith of Sandy, Utah. One Stepson, J. Kenneth Smith of
Rigby, Idaho, two Step daughters, Diana M. Russel (Philip) of Westminster, California, Kristie
L. Wagner of Idaho Falls, Idaho. One brother; Raymond (Dorothy) Smith of Bozeman, Montana.
Sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Eight Step grandchildren and one step great
grandchild
He was preceded in death by his wife Aletha Smith, one sister and a grandson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Eckersell Memorial Chapel (101 W.
Main Rigby) at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Lucretia Chew officiating. The family will meet with
friends at Eckersell Memorial Chapel 7:00 p.m to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2002 and on
Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at the funeral home from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in the
Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
