Robert “Bob” Hugh Johnson age 80, passed away November 9, 2014 in Hamer, Idaho with his family by his side.
He was born April 2, 1934 in Roberts, Idaho to Hugh Cameron Johnson and Ellen Althea Hart Johnson. He was the second of four children. Bob graduated from Roberts High School in 1952. He married Beverly Nielsen of Hamer, Idaho in 1951. He enlisted in the US Army in 1953 and served for two years then transferred to the Army Reserve. He then farmed in Hamer and worked at the Atomic Energy Commission. They later bought a ranch in Roberts, Idaho and farmed for several years. His love of horses was a life-long passion. At the age of fifteen he won the Pony Express Ride from Sage Junction to Rexburg against much older and experienced riders. After selling the ranch they moved to Pleasanton, California. He continued his passion for horse racing; he raced in northern California, Phoenix, Pocatello, Blackfoot and Boise with great success. He became an outrider while living in Pleasanton, California; he was injured while outriding and then went to school for saddle making in Northern California. He was very talented in making saddles and well known. They moved back to Hamer, Idaho in 1992.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Jean Johnson of Hamer, two daughters Roxanne (Lynn) Page of Rigby, Bobbie Jean Albertson of Boise, one son Ricky Hugh (Ranae) Johnson of Idaho Falls, sisters Beverly JoAnn Asher of Winnemucca, NV, Sonja “Sunnie” Dee (Dale) Cartier of Rigby, Idaho, eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Monty Jules Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2014 at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 W. Main Street, Rigby. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., prior to services, both at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Mud Lake Cemetery following funeral services, Military Rites will be by the Mud Lake VFW and the Idaho Honor Guard. Services are under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
