Robert Tolman Rainey

July 29, 1942 — April 10, 2010

Robert Tolman Rainey, 67, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed his final test in mortality and was called home April 10, 2010. Helen Tolman and William Webster Rainey welcomed Bob into their family July 29, 1942, at Monterey Park, California. The family later moved to Yucaipa, where Bob helped with the family chicken farm. He attended Yucaipa Junior High, but went to Redlands High School for two years because Yucaipa didn’t have a high school. He graduated from Baldwin Park High school and continued his education at what was then called the Church College of Hawaii. His LDS mission call was to the Gulf States which included Missouri, Louisiana, and Mississippi. After his mission, Bob enrolled at BYU where he met Marion Francis Hornor. They were married in the Los Angeles Temple June 11, 1965. Bob taught 7th and 8th grade geography and history for over 30 years at Terreton Elementary School and coached the 8th grade basketball team for many years. His love of sports, besides BYU games, included coaching Little League football, Babe Ruth baseball, West Jefferson high school baseball, and faithfully attending sports events for his children and grandchildren. He had an incredible gift for remembering and teaching geography and history, but his greatest gift was loving his children and grandchildren. He also loved to sing in the ward choir and enjoyed fishing at his cabin at Henry’s Lake. Bob is survived by his wife, Marion Rainey, of Terreton, daughters: Marion F. (George) Avery, of Lava Hot Springs, Jennifer (Tim) Beaman, of Woodbridge, VA; Melanie (Neil) Baird, of Macomb, IL; Camila Rainey, of Billings, MT; Jessie Pearl (Devro) Brinkerhoff, of Terreton. Sons: James W. (Summer) Rainey, of Terreton; Dan R. Rainey, of Pocatello; William T. Rainey, of Pocatello; Andrew J. (Nohemi) Rainey, of Yorktown, VA; Jacob H. (Julia) Rainey, of St. George, UT; Robert T. Rainey, of Terreton. Sisters: Lareine (Bud) Stephens, of Salt Lake City, UT; Christa (Jay) Fittinger, of Molalla, OR, and 19 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jack Rainey, and a granddaughter, Rachel Hope Hunting. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. at Terreton Stake Center, Saturday, April 17, 2010. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p. m. to 8:30 p. m., Friday, and from 9:30 to 10:45 a. m., prior to services, both at the church. Burial will be in the West Jefferson Cemetery, under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel, in Rigby.
