Russell “Doc” Wayne Hansen, 81, of Rigby, passed away at his home after a courageous battle with liver cancer, on Sunday November 1, 2015.
He was born August 6, 1934 in Shelley, Idaho a son to Wayne Clifton Hansen and Della Grace Arave Hansen. He attended Shelley Elementary, Whitney Elementary, Preston High School, Blackfoot High School, University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, Utah State University and Los Angeles College of Optometry. He practiced Optometry in Rigby for 31 years.
He was commissioned in the United States Air Force from 1958 until 1961 at Misawa Air Base, Japan. He married Lucilla May Hansen, August 28, 1953 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. She preceded him in death. He married Holly Poppell Steed, September 29, 2001 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he taught Seminary, served as a Stake Missionary, as Sunday School Superintendent, Explorer Advisor, Elders Quorum President, Executive Secretary, Ward Clerk and was a member of the High Council.
He was a member of the Jefferson County Posse, Jefferson County School Board, and Jefferson County Planning and zoning committee. He was vice president of the Rigby Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the National Chariot Racing Association.
Russ enjoyed building and flying his own airplane, racing horses and long motorcycle adventures with his family and friends. He was content working, building and creating anything he could imagine in his shop.
He is survived by his wife Holly of Rigby, a sister Arlene Udora Dalton, of Portland, Oregon, daughters: Annette (Lyle) Thompson of Rigby, Rochelle (Kris) Wright of Idaho Falls, a son Dwight (Brenda) Hansen of Idaho Falls, Step Children: Skyler (Shellie) Steed, Kami (Matt) Walker, Justin (Lesha) Steed, Jaren Steed, Suni Jo (Brian) Kimball, Jonathan Steed, Jessica (Daniel) Leishman, 14 grandchildren, 19 step grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Lucilla, a brother Kenneth Hansen and a sister Grace Hansen.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Garfield LDS Church, 5 North 3900 East, Rigby. The family will visit with friends Thursday, November 5th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby and on Friday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery. The family expresses appreciation for the care that Solace Hospice provided to Russ and the family.
