Samuel Call Chandler, 93 of San Francisco, California, formerly of Rigby, Idaho, passed away July 29, 2012 at his home.
He was born May 4, 1919 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to William James Chandler and Mary Nancy Call Chandler, the 6th of 12 children. He was raised and attended schools in Southeastern Idaho, beginning with first grade in a three-room school house then completing two years of college at Ricks College in Rexburg. At age 21 he served a two year mission in Canada for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his return home he was met with “Greetings” from Uncle Sam to report for duty. The next three years he was a member of the US Army Air Force assigned to a U.S. Airfield in England. After his safe return from WWII, he continued his education at Brigham Young University where he received both a BA and MA degrees followed by a MA in Library Science from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1948 he married Ruth Stowell of Pocatello, Idaho in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Their first home was in Delta, Utah, where Sam taught school before pursing graduate degrees.
Sam’s lifelong love of books led him to a successful and enjoyable career in University and in Public Libraries. During Sam’s 32 year library career he worked one year at Idaho State University at Pocatello, for six years at Brigham Young University, Provo and as Director of Libraries in Daly City for 25 years, until he retired in 1983.
Sam wrote a history of Daly City, “Gateway to the Peninsula” and a book of historical fiction, “Son of Bear Hunter.”
Sam was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities, including; Bishop, Patriarch, and various positions in the Oakland LDS Temple. He and his wife Ruth also served a mission to Argentina.
In retirement Sam and Ruth enjoyed traveling, eating lunch at the Doelger Senior Center, and spending time with family and friends. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Stowell Chandler, six children; David (Donna Shipp) Chandler, Lloyd Chandler, Lynette (Roger) Lubeck, Marianne (Sergio) Paredes, Thomas (Madeline Munger) Chandler, Nancy (Reginald) Hanaike; 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 4, 2012, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 730 Sharp Park Rd Pacifica, CA under the care of Duggan’s Serra Mortuary in Daly City, California.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
