Samuel Gould Winn, age 88, of Rigby, passed away at his home Friday, November 10, 2017. Sam was born July 17, 1929 in Nephi, Utah. His parents were Herbert Henry “Bert” Winn and Twila Belle Gould Winn. Sam attended grade school at the old Central School in Juab County. He quit school and entered the Army in 1951 where he served for two years. Sam served his country well. In 1953, Sam returned to Juab High School determined to finish his Junior and Senior year. Sam graduated in 1955 at the age of 24. At a young age Sam was riding cows at his father’s farm in Nephi. At age 13, he rode his first bareback horse at Juab County Fair. In 1948, he attended his first pro rodeo at Deseret, Utah. He took 2nd place in bareback and 3rd place in bull riding. In 1955, he attended Utah State University. While there he was on the USU Rodeo Team. Sam represented himself, Utah State University and Nephi, his home town with pride. Sam won many awards and buckles for his riding abilities. Sam won three RMRA bareback titles, was RMRA bull riding champion twice and was RMRA saddle bronc finals champion three times. He is a self-made cowboy, has a contagious smile and a humble way that are true reflections of a self-made champion. Besides Rodeo’s Sam enjoyed leather work, buying and selling horses, tack and saddles and reading Louie Lamoure. Sam was also a champion to his family. He married Edith Jane Miller in Provo, Utah on October 20, 1977, their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo, Utah LDS Temple November 27, 1987. Sam had an unshakeable testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He farmed and ranched as well as worked at the Rubber Plant in Nephi, Geneva Pipe and for Dale Smith Meat Packing. He is survived by his wife Edith J. Winn of Rigby, a daughter, Julie Ann LoRusso of Lindon, Utah, six sons: Kyle M. Holdaway of Mud Lake, Kevin Leo Holdaway of Pocatello, Bryan Wade (Julie) Holdaway of Monteview, Shawn Todd Holdaway of Rigby, Chad (Kristy) Holdaway of Terreton and Chris Barry (Cindy) Holdaway of Monteview, three sisters: Ramona Rosenlund of Santaquin, Utah, Betty Allen of Nephi, Utah and Ruth Wilde of Nebraska, a brother Steve Winn of Nephi, Utah, 26 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Jay Winn, Nola Brinkman and David Winn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Rigby Idaho East Stake Center, 4027 East 300 North, Rigby, Idaho with Bishop Michael Clark officiating. The family will visit with friends on Friday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center. Burial will be in the West Jefferson Memorial Park Cemetery in Mud Lake, Idaho.
