 AGE- “Old as Dirt”

Steve was born in Leadore, Idaho to his parent’s Everett “Mugs” and Lois Stroud along with his brother Randy, sister Brenda, and later his brother Jay joined the clan.

Steve was a true outdoorsman and an amazing husband, brother, son, uncle and friend to all those who knew him.

He had a passion for the great outdoors and grew up hunting fishing, riding and breaking horses, playing basketball and being a great big brother and son to his family. His family could call on him anytime and he would be there. He loved anything that said “Let’s be in the Mountains “.

He worked for various fishing, hunting, and white-water rafting guides in and around Leadore and Salmon, Idaho. He also spent time operating heavy equipment logging timber. He could ride a horse, chop a tree, or fix about anything he put his mind to. Family and friends could depend on his vast knowledge of the great outdoors, as well as his unique ability to just figure complex stuff out. We all called on Steve when we were dealing with something difficult.

In 1983 he moved to Dubois, Idaho to be with the love of his life Robin Robinett. They spent 43 years building a life together. Hunting, camping, fishing, riding horses, working and being with family.

Steve hired on at the Targhee National Forest Service in Dubois, Idaho as a seasonal firefighter and with this he started his great outdoor career!!! Steve spent many years as a forest firefighter then continued on as the engine foreman for the forest service for several more years. Steve also served as the Fire Chief for the city of Dubois. He used his vast knowledge of fixing things to get the old truck running and fire ready until a new one was later purchased. He passed his skills and knowledge onto the younger guys who served with him, teaching them to be the next generation. As Steve continue his career at the Dubois forest service he joined the Heli Tack team, and it was his responsibility to make sure all the equipment and tools were ready to go as well as making sure every firefighter got on and off the helicopter safely as they flew to different hotspots or deployment areas. After several years of this craziness, he left the firefighting to the younger guns and continued at the Dubois forest service as their trail, cabin and sign “Guru”! With passion and dedication, he learned how to restore old cabins for campers to enjoy. There was not a trail that wasn’t cleared, a sign that wasn’t in its place and he knew every trailhead, lake, pond, creek, and puddle from Dubois to Leadore. If it had a fish in it, he knew about it. He was revered for his work ethic and knowledge, love of animals, people from every walk of life and his kids. Steve never knew a stranger. If you wanted to learn about hunting, fishing, packing a horse, or camping, you went to Steve. He would teach anyone who wanted to learn if you put in the effort. All of us girls got to learn the same as the boys, he didn’t care, if you wanted to learn and you put in the work he would teach you.

After Steve retired from the forest service, his work did not stop. Steve continued cutting wood, fixing and repairing anything someone needed fixed or just went to help those who needed his help. He truly embodied the definition of a “true friend” and being neighborly to those around him.

He loved driving his bronco all over the country, letting us kids drive in the mountains and maybe be in a ditch or up a tree. Every family reunion, football game, basketball game, and of course fishing, camping, hunting or riding horses, he was there whenever he could be. He even played in a daddy daughter game where the old farts beat us. Everyone could depend on Steve. We all love you and miss you!! You will be deeply missed by so many!! Thank you for teaching us to be the next generation.

Steve is survived by his the love of his life, his wife, Robin Robinett, his mom Lois, brothers Randy and Jay (Roberta), sister Brenda and “his kids” Mark, Jason, Vicki, Troy, Josh, Dallas, Riley, Tanner (Cody), Dillon (Amber), Melissa (Earl), Brooke (Brandon), Linda (Steven), Kristy (Matthew), Jake (Autumn), Amber (Jared), Britney, Patty, Allen Lynn (deceased), and the little littles — Talon, Sylvan, Titus, Noah, Samuel, Kaylee, Chloe, Creed, Bella, Bailey, Brinlee, Jaylynn, Kinsley, Lorelai, Rugar-James, Haelynn, McKinlee, Emmett, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
