Valerie Mitchell

Valerie Kaye Hill Mitchell, 73, of Rigby, passed away December 4, 2009, in her home in Arizona of an extended illness. She was born November 12th, 1936, in Rigby, Idaho to Kenneth Johnson Hill and Iola Blackburn Hill. She attended schools in the Rigby area and graduated from Rigby High School in 1955. She attended BYU and also Idaho State College. While at ISC she met her husband, Jim Mitchell. They were married for 51 years. She taught kindergarten in her home where she was known as Ms. Val for 9 years. During that time she opened a dress shop called Val’s Mod’rn Day. She was well known for writing and performance as the character in her TV commercials. Her store was adjacent to her husband’s Ace Hardware. After many years of working hand-in-hand they retired in 1996. From that time on they spend winters in Arizona, traveled extensively, and spent summers in Rigby near their family, where they own and operate Big Jim’s Storage. She was a member of the LDS Church. She was involved with Ski Patrol at Grand Targhee approximately 15 years, as an American Red Cross Swim Instructor, she was active in 20-30 Clubs, a LDS Stake Dance Director, and Jefferson Hills Ladies Golf Association. Her smile and love will be greatly missed by all. She is survived by her husband; Jim Mitchell, of Rigby, her daughter; Lindsi (Dale) Shippen, of Rigby, siblings; Karolyn (Gary) Johnson, of Mesa, AZ, Shannon (Gary) Summers, of Rexburg, Creighton (Tammy) Hill, of Lenexa, KS, and 2 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter, Morgan and her son, Devron. Services will be held at1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 12, 2009, at the Rigby LDS Chapel 401 W. 1st South, Rigby, under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel, in Rigby. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to services at the church.
