Vera Shippen

March 11, 1929 — April 15, 2017

On Saturday April 15th, 2017 Vera Shippen was welcomed home to a heavenly reunion with her parents, Thomas Casper Shippen and her Mother, Eliza Cordella "Cora" Boyce Shippen Anderson and all eight of her siblings. Thomas Reed (Ona), Grant Boyce (Margie), Walter Wesley, Ruth (Cliff), Paul Rex (Lola), Veda (Dean), Naomi (Bruce), Ben Ray (Joan). Vera was born on March, 11th 1929 along with her twin sister, Veda in Menan, Idaho. In her life Vera was a true trailblazer. She was the first of her family to attend college and graduate from Brigham Young University. Vera was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She faithfully served in the New York Eastern States Mission. While serving, one of the many highlights was to participate in the Hill Cumorah pageant. After college and mission life, Vera packed her bags and left for San Diego for a time. Soon after, she moved to Los Angeles to begin her teaching career working with second graders with underprivileged children in the inner-city of Compton, and soon after, relocated to Pasadena. Eventually, she settled in Temple City, where she continued her career teaching until she retired. Many stories were shared of her students, and Miss Shippen. She truly loved the children she served for many, many years. Her students are too many to count. In addition to teaching, she volunteered and served in several different capacities' as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Vera served many years in the Los Angeles Temple, as well as donating time at the church bookstore. Vera made lifelong friends while living in Southern California.Vera loved the outdoors, her daily walks, gardening, and camping. A true highlight of her life was the many road-trips she enjoyed with her three sisters. She was a talented seamstress and sewed many of her own clothes. Vera loved her cats. She was a cat lady in the best way possible. No cat ever had it so good as to be counted as one of hers. She was also a member of The Daughters of The Utah Pioneers and was proud of her pioneer heritage. "Remember Who You Are" was more than a simple catch phrase for Vera. This sentence rang true to her throughout her life. She never forgot who she was. Vera was a daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, a child of God, and a Shippen! For 30 years, Vera, along with her three sisters, would spend time planning a week-long Shippen family reunion every other year. Their goal was to teach the Shippen posterity who they were. Because of her selfless service to her family, they can all say they know who they are. Because of her service and love for the multiple Shippen generations, they also knew and loved her as well as each other. Due to declining health, Vera relocated to Highland, UT to be close to family. It was there she peacefully passed. The Ben Shippen family served Vera with love and kindness. The family will be forever grateful. Vera will be missed by many. She is survived by her two sister in laws who are her true sisters, Margie Shippen and Joan Shippen, and four generations of nieces and nephews. Her legacy of love for her family will continue. She has been a great example in so many ways. Graveside Services and Internment will be held Saturday April 29th at Annis Little Butte Cemetery, 12 Noon, Menan Idaho. All are welcome.
