Vern Ulysses Pettingill

Vern Ulysses Pettingill, age 91, of Rigby, died Sunday, October 24, 2004, at Pinebrook Assisted Living in Rigby. Vern was born July 16, 1913, at Rigby, Idaho a son of John Ulysses Pettingill and Armeda Josephine Johnson Pettingill. He attended Rigby Schools. He quit school to run the family farm after his father passed away. He married DeEsta Coucher December 27, 1935 in the Logan Utah LDS Temple. He worked for Lyle Peterson Construction after he was married and continued to run the family farm as well as raise cattle. He later had his own construction business working throughout the Snake River Valley until his retirement in 1980. DeEsta passed away March 17, 1973. On February 14, 1974 He married Melba Sauer Foster in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. At 79 years of age he went on a mission to Navoo, Illinois with his wife Melba. He served on the Jefferson County Historical Society for many years. He loved raising cattle. He is survived by a son Gary C. (Sandy) Pettingill of Rigby and a daughter DeEsta Katter of Salt Lake City, Utah, four step-children, Susan Marriott of Salt Lake City, Utah, Marilyn Jensen of Rigby, Brad (Sharol) Foster of Rigby, Boyd (Laurie) Foster of Rigby, two brothers Jack (Phyllis) Pettingill of Yakima, Washington and Dean (LaNae) Pettingill of Yuma, Arizona, 5 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives DeEsta and Melba, a son Phillip Vern Pettingill, two sisters Glenda Geisler and Rhea Covington and a brother Joseph Pettingill. Funeral services will be held Thursday October 28, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the Rigby East LDS Stake Center, 4021 East 300 North, Rigby with Bishop Steve Anderson officiating. The family will visit with friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 West Main Street, Rigby and on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.
