Wilford Lee Hammon, age 88, of Menan, died at Homestead Assisted Living Center in Rexburg, Monday, January 14, 2008.
He was born June 5, 1919, at Ammon, a son of Heber Levi Hammon and Sarah Ann Waters Hammon. He grew up in Ammon and Bone Idaho; he attended schools in Ammon, and Ucon and graduated from Mid-way High School near Menan. He continued his education at Idaho State University. He served in the U.S. Army, 776 Tank Battalion during WWII in the European Theatre. November 12, 1945 he married Mary Elizabeth Shaw at Kansas City, Kansas; their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple March 31, 1949. She preceded him in death. He married Della Green Hansen Jan 2, 1997 at Idaho Falls; she also preceded him in death.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a member of the VFW, and Sons of the Utah Pioneers. He participated in the Boy Scouts of America for over forty years, and received the Silver Beaver Award. He carved thousands of Boy Scout neckerchief slides that he gave away.
He is survived by daughters; Lois (Dennis) Hansen, of Rexburg, Jolene (David) Willis, of Rigby, Alice Hammon of Menan, a son; Deloy (Roxanna) Hammon of, Menan, sisters; Hazel Atwood, of Travelers Rest, SC, Sadie Acor, of Terreton, Louannie Youngstrom of Aberdeen, fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, one sister, a son; Terry Hammon, and two grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the Menan LDS Stake Center, with Bishop Eric Beck, officiating. The family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, and Saturday, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. both at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
